Women continued to play a part, however, not only where the vertical loom was in use, but also in broadloom weaving, often paired with their husbands.

The gradual expansion of existing settlements was only one form taken by the opening of the medieval wilderness. Outright colonization was another, requiring the shift of peasants away from their native villages in order to found new ones some distance away.
