Hardly satisfied with this compromise, Arthur A. Stoughton, in commenting on the annual end-of-the-year exhibition in May, 1923, lamented that the city council had not had the opportunity to see this exhibition before deciding to halve their grant. In his review, he attempted to point out the service that had been rendered by both the Art Gallery and the School of Art to the community: Sir, -The reason as given in the press for the Finance committee's action in jettisoning the annual grant for the Winnipeg School of Art, was because the School includes in its curriculum the teaching of commercial art.
