By plotting the wear rates of the various materials on the chart to intercept the 4140 steel life, the thickness requirements for the other materials necessary to deliver the same lifetime as the steel can be read from the Y-axis of the chart.

Samples were installed in the Falex test fixture, aligned, and clamped into position. A 30 lb. load was applied to the specimen. Sand flow, rubber test wheel rotation, and test timer were started, and the test was run for 10 minutes. Upon test completion, the volume of sand used was measured to determine sand flow rate. 0001 in. Four tests were conducted for each material. Average wear data for each material is summarized in Table II. All composites exhibit improved wear resistance when reported as mass loss, as illustrated in Figure 2.
